Fixed layout or reflowable EPUB: choose by the reading task

Decide which relationships need to stay fixed

A picture-book spread may position words around the object they describe. A biography paragraph usually carries its meaning through word order rather than its printed coordinates. Ask what would be lost if the content flowed into a narrow screen. Fixed layout can preserve arrangement; reflowable text can make continuous reading more comfortable. Neither is a universal improvement for every document.

Test the reader control that matters

For a reflowable reading edition, increasing font size should change line wrapping and the number of screens while leaving paragraph order understandable. For fixed page content, enlarging can behave more like zooming a page. Check the body text rather than a cover. A file called EPUB can contain different kinds of layout, so the extension alone does not establish adjustable prose.

Keep essential page artwork available

Maps, forms, illustrated exercises and intricate comparisons may need the original arrangement. A mixed document can still benefit from an EPUB for its prose while the PDF remains the reference for page artwork. Compare one ordinary passage and one layout-dependent page before deciding. If converting moves a label away from the thing it identifies, retain the source for that relationship.

A concrete example

A picture-book sentence may point at an object across the spread. A biography paragraph does not usually need its original page coordinates. Moving both through the same layout treatment can produce very different results.

A two-part decision example

Take a biography chapter with a labelled map at the end. For the narrative, increase the font size and follow a paragraph across two screens. For the map, inspect the legend and the relationship between place names. The best reading plan may be a reflowable narrative beside the original map rather than an attempt to make one representation do everything.

Now contrast that with a picture-book spread where “under the tree” appears physically beneath the tree. Moving those words can change the reading activity. Write down which relationship must remain before trying conversion. This simple distinction is more useful than assuming that a modern file format always improves the document.

A fixed page can still be zoomable, and a reflowable book can still contain fixed images. Test the ordinary body paragraph and the relevant artwork separately. The choice is about which relationships adapt comfortably, not whether one label means that everything in the file will respond identically to every reader control.

Use the paper for content and layout checks

The published research-paper comparison pairs fixed PDF pages with actual saved EPUBs. In the reviewed EPUBTurn reviewed export, the checked prose remains in order and the three Figure 1 panels remain visible. Lower axes are clipped, which is a content limitation independent of whether the paragraph can resize.

In your reader, increase the body text and follow the same passage across the new screen breaks. Then compare the whole figure against page three. A changed number of screens is normal for adjustable text; missing labels are not explained by reflow.

Choose reflow without demanding original geometry

The actual paper abstract rewrapped in Apple Books after one font increase. The actual cookbook measures EPUB supplies another distinction: six measurement rows survive as selectable list items, not the original table grid. Reflow can make words easier to read while changing arrangement. Keep the fixed source when that arrangement is essential.

Actual reflow of the research-paper abstract

The saved reviewed paper EPUB reflowed in Apple Books on Mac after one View > Increase Font Size action. The view first repaginated to earlier text. Moving right returned to the abstract, whose line breaks had changed and whose text continued across the spread; a further move reached the following passage.

Those are adjustable reading paragraphs, not a whole-page zoom. The paired views show the same abstract in an unchanged file. They do not establish complete reader compatibility or figure accuracy: the reviewed export still clips lower Figure 1 axis labels and followed three manual equation-crop corrections.

Check whether adjustable text helps without losing a relationship supplied by the original page layout.
