BOOX PDF or EPUB reading: choose by the task
Device software and reading apps vary. Use your model’s current official guidance and inspect the same passage in both formats rather than assuming one universal winner.

Match NeoReader guidance to your firmware
BOOX’s documented Firmware 4.1 PDF controls include reading themes and Style → reading theme → Zoom Mode. Fit to Width is a useful first check when the original page is too small. The documented Layout tab applies to fixed-layout formats such as PDF and includes reflow controls. These adjustments affect the reader view; they are not an EPUB export.
BOOX’s older Help Center URLs were not consistently retrievable during this audit. Use the official downloads guidance to obtain the manual through your device’s Settings and match the firmware version. We did not test a BOOX model. Avoid assuming that a large-screen guide’s dual-page view exists on every small device.
What this guide establishes
Use the linked BOOX instructions for transfer controls. No physical BOOX test is claimed here. The published-paper archive checks establish saved text and figure content, not the behaviour of that device.
For a file to inspect, download the source and reviewed EPUBTurn export from the published research-paper comparison. The export required three corrected equation crops and has clipped lower chart-axis labels. Record your model, software and transfer route. Distinguish import rejection from a missing passage after import.
Begin with the BOOX reading task
BOOX devices and software vary, so use guidance for your model and firmware. The official PDF guidance describes adjustment features for PDF and similar content. Those controls can make retaining a PDF a useful option when annotation or original page arrangement matters. Do not assume that every model exposes the same feature or menu.
Compare the same passage in two formats
For a technical manual, read one continuous explanation in the PDF and EPUB. Then inspect the associated diagram. Notice whether you prefer adjustable paragraphs or the original page relationship. If you annotate exact page coordinates, retain the PDF; if you mostly follow prose, a reading edition may be useful alongside it.
A concrete example
If annotating exact page artwork matters, keep the PDF. If you mainly read prose at larger text sizes, compare an EPUB edition on your own device before deciding.
Keep an annotation task in the comparison
If your manual requires writing notes against a diagram, try that exact task in the original PDF before deciding to convert. The important outcome may be stable page positioning rather than larger text. For a long prose explanation, try the EPUB paragraph at a comfortable size and compare navigation to the relevant section.
Record which task each format handles better for your actual file. BOOX supports multiple reading behaviours depending on model and software, so a generic preference cannot establish your configuration. Follow the official manual for available controls and preserve the PDF for exact diagrams. This guide supplies a decision method; it does not pretend we performed a physical BOOX comparison.
If you use handwriting or page-based annotations, confirm whether those notes belong to the PDF or a particular reading app. Changing the document format does not automatically carry every annotation across. Keep the annotated source and consult the device’s current guidance for export or backup before replacing a workflow you rely on.
Use a real technical figure for your BOOX check
The actual NASA sample EPUB retains six labelled hardware drawings and selected prose. Those give you concrete content to inspect after your BOOX model imports the book. We have not performed that physical-device task. Compare the original labels at your usual text size; keep the PDF if annotation or exact diagram placement matters.
Check adjustable body text and a detailed figure separately in the reading app you use on BOOX.
