How to fix broken line breaks in a converted EPUB

If each printed line becomes its own short paragraph, increasing the font size will not fix the reading flow. The conversion needs to distinguish a line ending from the end of a thought. EPUBTurn is designed to rebuild reading content into adjustable paragraphs; its free sample lets you check how the paragraphs from your PDF behave.

A line ending is not always a paragraph ending

A PDF page may print a sentence across several lines because a column is narrow. Those line endings describe where the words fit on that page. They do not necessarily mean the author wanted a pause after every line.

A conversion can carry those fixed breaks into the reading edition. The result feels choppy: a few words, a new line, another few words. On a different screen the short lines stay short, even though there is space for more text.

First distinguish that behaviour from normal wrapping. Every reader must start a new line when the screen is full. The problem is when the old page's line endings remain fixed and interrupt otherwise continuous text.

EPUBTurn offers a sample reading edition for PDFs you are allowed to upload; keep the original available for checking.

Try the same paragraph at two font sizes

Choose an ordinary body paragraph, not a title, poem, list or address. Increase the font size, then reduce it again. In a readable paragraph, the line endings move as the available space changes, while the passage remains together.

If the same fragments remain separated at both sizes, the old line endings may have become permanent breaks. If the words also appear in the wrong order, investigate mixed columns before treating the problem as spacing.

Changing line spacing only changes the distance between lines. It cannot reliably repair a paragraph that has been split into unrelated pieces.

Identify the unwanted break inside a real paragraph

Find the exact body paragraph in both the PDF and a backed-up EPUB. Check whether the source line ending is ordinary wrapping or an intentional break. In the chapter markup, replace only a confirmed unwanted break with the correct space; keep the paragraph boundaries. Save a new copy and read the passage at two text sizes. Do not remove every break in a poem, address or list.

These are targeted repair steps for your own file, not a newly executed before-and-after demonstration. Keep the unchanged original, an edit log and the exact reader version. Validate the saved copy and compare the full passage with the PDF before relying on the result.

Follow a simple sentence through the change

Choose an ordinary sentence from page two of the research-paper PDF. Identify its beginning and end in the source, then find the same sentence in the reading copy. Ignore the printed line endings and follow the actual words.

At a larger text size, the sentence may occupy more lines. The population description and associated range should remain together. If a permanent break splits a phrase, locate the chapter markup before changing anything. A source citation or deliberate list break must not be joined merely because it looks short.

Check split words without deleting real hyphens

A word divided across printed lines can leave an awkward hyphen in the middle of a sentence. Compare the word with the source and read it in context. A line-end split in a word such as “illustration” is different from an intentional hyphen in “well-known.”

Do not remove every hyphen from the document. Names, compound terms, ranges and specialist words may need them. If many words are damaged, correcting them one by one can become more work than starting again from a better source or conversion.

Know when another problem is involved

Blurred scans, missing characters and interrupted column order can look like a wrapping problem. If a sentence still makes no sense after you follow the source carefully, check whether words are missing or whether a sidebar has entered the passage.

Use the formatting overview to identify the main issue, then judge EPUBTurn on that issue in your sample. Try a free sample before committing to the full document.

Try reconstructing the original PDF with EPUBTurn

Upload the original PDF to EPUBTurn and inspect the selected sample pages. The service aims to reconstruct coherent reading content rather than leave each printed line as a separate fragment. Check a paragraph you can also locate in the original, then change the reading size.

A sample is particularly useful because some documents mix ordinary prose with captions, verse or lists. Those parts may need different breaks. Good paragraph flow should not come at the expense of joining an address or poem into one block.

Try the source when paragraph repair is widespread

The actual NASA sample EPUB contains selected prose as text rather than a whole-page picture. Compare a complete passage and its boundaries before deciding whether a new conversion is simpler than editing many hard breaks. EPUBTurn takes the original PDF, not the EPUB you are repairing. Intentional verse and list breaks still need their own checks.
