How to remove duplicated text from EPUB

Determine the role of each repeated block

Find the repeated sentence in the PDF. A pull quote can intentionally repeat words from the body, while a running header can repeat on every printed page. Identify those roles before deleting anything. Two body paragraphs repeated in sequence are a different issue from a caption that legitimately echoes an instruction.

Keep the continuous article intact

For a magazine pull quote, follow the main paragraph through the surrounding sentences. Decide which occurrence belongs to the continuous article. An isolated decorative repetition can sometimes be omitted from a reading edition, but the body occurrence should remain. Check that removing one copy does not also remove the adjacent figure reference or paragraph ending.

Compare repeated passages before removing one

Find both occurrences and compare their surrounding paragraphs with the source. A pull quote, repeated warning or summary can be intentional. Delete only a confirmed accidental duplicate from a backed-up EPUB. Keep the occurrence in the correct continuous passage and check any link that targets the removed element. Read beyond the edit to ensure the sequence remains complete.

These are targeted repair steps for your own file, not a newly executed before-and-after demonstration. Keep the unchanged original, an edit log and the exact reader version. Validate the saved copy and compare the full passage with the PDF before relying on the result.

Use targeted corrections

A global duplicate-removal rule can erase intentional refrains, repeated legal language or exercise prompts. Inspect each suspect block against the source. Record the location and role so a later reviewer can understand why a copy was removed. Recheck reading order afterward; duplication and misplaced paragraphs can occur together and need separate repairs.

A worked reading example

A designed pull quote is intentional, but the main paragraph should not appear twice in the reading flow. Compare both copies and preserve whichever belongs to the continuous article.

Inspect repeated text with its neighbours

A duplicated paragraph can be attached to two different headings or figures. Read the sentence before and after each occurrence to determine which position matches the PDF. The duplicated wording alone may not tell you which block to keep.

For a pull quote, preserve the full sentence in its original body paragraph. If you omit the decorative repetition, check that no unique wording was added in the quote. Some magazines shorten or paraphrase a pull quote rather than repeat it exactly. Record the decision against the source, and keep an unchanged output so the correction remains visible rather than being presented as raw converter behaviour.

If the same short phrase is repeated at every page boundary, examine the source header or footer. If a long passage repeats only once, compare the article layout. These different patterns help you select a focused check. They do not justify deleting all repeated wording from a document whose style may use deliberate repetition.
