How to restore missing paragraphs in a converted EPUB

Locate anchors around the suspected gap

Choose a distinctive phrase before the apparent omission and another after it. Find both in the source and read the intervening text. Then search the EPUB for a phrase from the missing passage. The text may have moved into another section or mixed with a caption rather than disappeared entirely.

Check a boundary, not only a search hit

A search result proves that a phrase exists somewhere, not that its paragraph is complete or correctly placed. Read the whole passage and its neighbours. Inspect column endings, page endings and positions around figures, which are useful places to look for an interrupted sequence. Record the source location and output location for any moved material.

Restore only wording established by the source

Search for a distinctive phrase before deciding that a passage is missing. The words may exist in the wrong chapter or in an unexpected image. If the passage is genuinely absent, use the authorised PDF as the reference and restore the complete wording in a copied EPUB. Keep citations, qualifications and paragraph boundaries. Compare the surrounding text after saving; do not invent a transition to make the edit sound natural.

These are targeted repair steps for your own file, not a newly executed before-and-after demonstration. Keep the unchanged original, an edit log and the exact reader version. Validate the saved copy and compare the full passage with the PDF before relying on the result.

Recover only from the verified source

If editing a copy, restore the passage from an authorised source and compare punctuation, numbers and emphasis. Do not reconstruct a missing sentence from context. Keep a repair log and reopen the affected section afterward. For important reference work, use the PDF while uncertainty remains; a readable edition with an undisclosed omission is not a reliable substitute.

A worked reading example

Read the final source paragraph before the jump and the first paragraph after it. Search for a distinctive phrase in the EPUB; the passage may be misplaced rather than absent.

Check the final passage too

Readers often inspect the introduction first, but missing content can occur near the end, in appendices or after a complex figure. Choose one distinctive ending phrase and confirm the complete concluding paragraph is present. If the source ends with a qualification or recommendation, preserve it in context.

Keep your omission record separate from correction work. Record what was absent or misplaced before repairing a copy, then reopen that specific passage afterward. A successful repair of one gap does not establish the entire document; continue using a small set of anchors across the source. For important details outside the inspected sample, retain uncertainty until the full reading edition is checked.

Search results can skip visible formatting context. After finding the phrase, open its actual section and inspect the paragraph order. A passage hidden in an unrelated caption is present in a technical sense but still misplaced for reading. Completeness and sequence should both be checked before closing a missing-text investigation.

Check continuation before calling a passage absent

The actual cookbook sample preserves Water Bread’s eight ingredient entries and preparation wording. The following Milk and Water Bread sentence continues onto the next selected page but is interrupted by a source page marker and header. The words can be present while the reading sequence is awkward.

Download the actual source and sample to distinguish missing text from interruption. Search beyond the visible break and compare the source continuation. No manual fix was made to this sample, and no promise follows for passages outside the three selected pages.

EPUBTurn starts from the original PDF. For a new conversion, locate a distinctive passage and its neighbouring paragraphs in the sample.

NASA source

D. Harold Shelton, Apollo experience report: Lunar module stabilization and control system, NASA, 1975. US government work; public use permitted. Original pages 3–8 extracted; sample selects excerpt pages 4–6.

Cookbook source

Fannie Merritt Farmer, Boston Cooking-School Cook Book, 1917. The sample uses original scan pages 42, 86 and 87; unchanged source pages and an unedited reading sample are supplied. Historical recipes are reading material, not current safety guidance.
