Cisdem or EPUBTurn: compare the workflow for illustrated papers

Cisdem advertises EPUB export, OCR, page selection and batch conversion. For one illustrated paper, inspect a real figure and caption before choosing a desktop or browser workflow.

One paper and a batch job need different decisions

Cisdem’s official product page lists EPUB output, OCR, selected-page conversion and batch conversion. Those advertised options may suit a collection of documents or a workflow requiring controlled page ranges. Confirm the platform, edition and trial coverage for the software you would install.

For one difficult journal article, EPUBTurn offers a reading-focused alternative. Inspect the sample’s illustrated content before preparing several exports. The value of a simpler trial comes from whether the included pages help, not from an assumption that desktop conversion is inferior.

What the EPUBTurn review required

EPUBTurn’s initial export was blocked by a quality check on equation crops on page 7. Three rectangles were manually reviewed and corrected. The displayed EPUBTurn result includes that review; it is not an untouched default conversion.

The download comes from EPUBTurn’s existing EPUB exporter. The browser service still blocked export because its job status had not updated. We did not obtain a working browser download for this trial.

What the reviewed reading copy shows

The reviewed EPUBTurn result includes the map, density plot and scatterplot with their legends and caption. However, the bottom axis labels and ticks in panels B and C are clipped. The figure is partly preserved, not complete. Column order and the selected Results values remain correct in the passages checked.

Judge the whole figure, not just its caption

The source is original pages 1–10 of a Nature Communications study of coral reef fish reproductive potential. Figure 1 spans three panels: a world map, a density view with intervals and a scatterplot. Colours, legends and reference lines carry information that cannot be replaced by a list of extracted numbers.

What has not been measured

We did not install Cisdem or obtain its EPUB from this paper. Its advertised batch, page-range and recognition features are documented capabilities, not measured results here. No screenshot below shows Cisdem output, and the guide does not claim Cisdem would lose the figure.

The paper has digital text and vector plots rather than a raster-only scanned page. The example therefore helps evaluate illustrated reading content, but does not establish either service’s accuracy on scans. Use a separate permitted scan when recognition is the actual reason for choosing software.

Build a useful trial before committing

When investigating Cisdem, record the selected pages and OCR setting beside each exported file. A clean first page from one service cannot fairly stand in for a dense figure page from another. Compare the same material and keep the unedited downloads.

For EPUBTurn, check the automatic sample’s coverage before drawing a conclusion about your whole collection. Up to ten selected pages may not include a later appendix or the one plot you need. A successful sample answers for the included content, not for every file in a batch.
