How to fix excessive EPUB margins and indentation
Preserve genuine quotation indentation while reducing accidental blank space. A global change can flatten lists or nested passages that need their hierarchy.

Compare reader settings with file styling
Change the reader margin setting and open another EPUB as a comparison. If both become narrow, the reader preference is a likely part of the issue. If only the converted document keeps large blank edges, its own styling deserves inspection. Keep notes about which setting changed what rather than making several adjustments at once.
Preserve intentional indentation
Quotations, nested lists and excerpts can legitimately use indentation. A paragraph squeezed into a narrow strip is different from a short quoted passage. Compare the same section with the PDF and identify the role of the indented block. Removing every margin globally can erase hierarchy the author expected you to notice.
Change one layout rule and inspect the passage
Try the reader’s margin controls before editing the file. If the affected EPUB remains narrow, inspect the relevant paragraph and container rules in a backup. Reduce the confirmed excessive margin or indent, then check headings, quotations and lists as well as ordinary prose. Save a separate copy and compare both text sizes. A wide global reset can remove useful hierarchy while making the first paragraph look better.
These are targeted repair steps for your own file, not a newly executed before-and-after demonstration. Keep the unchanged original, an edit log and the exact reader version. Validate the saved copy and compare the full passage with the PDF before relying on the result.
Recheck the whole section after a repair
Keep an unchanged copy, alter only the excessive spacing you have identified and reopen the affected section. Inspect its heading, lists and nearby illustration as well as the first paragraph. A change that makes one screen wider can overflow a table or collapse a nested list elsewhere. Use the original for any relationship that a repair cannot preserve reliably.
A worked reading example
Try the reader’s margin setting first and compare another EPUB. If only the converted file stays narrow, the file’s own layout may be responsible rather than the device setting.
Use a paragraph, quotation and list
Inspect three content roles after reducing excessive margins: an ordinary paragraph, a quotation and a nested list. The paragraph should gain usable width without flattening meaningful indentation elsewhere. Compare each role with the PDF rather than applying a global zero-margin rule.
Then change the text size and inspect a nearby figure or table. A fixed width that looked acceptable at one size may overflow at another. Keep the original EPUB and note the styling change in your repaired copy. If the problem is only a reader preference, retain the content unchanged and save the setting instead. The smallest verified change is usually easier to inspect again.
A first-line indent and a page margin are different spacing choices. Compare the left edge of subsequent lines with the first line before changing both. Removing a legitimate indent may improve neither width nor comfort. Identify which area consumes the space, then make a focused change and inspect the paragraph again.
Check the paragraph before changing its margins
The actual NASA sample EPUB supplies selected prose to inspect at your reader’s actual width. No measured margin repair is claimed. Try the app’s controls first and compare the source passage, then edit only a confirmed problematic rule in a copied EPUB. If broad extraction problems justify starting again, EPUBTurn requires the original PDF.
