Local or online PDF conversion for private documents
Follow your organisation’s document policy first. Check provider retention and processing rules, or choose an approved local workflow when upload is not permitted.

Check whether upload is allowed
Ask the document owner or follow your organisation’s policy before uploading confidential material. Access to a contract or personnel report does not necessarily authorise third-party processing. A short excerpt can still disclose sensitive clauses or names. Do not treat a sample as a loophole. If you cannot establish permission, retain the PDF or choose an approved local process.
Local processing is a workflow choice
A desktop converter such as Calibre offers a local conversion route. Installing software, plugins or cloud-connected components still deserves your organisation’s normal checks. Local conversion does not automatically make output accurate, and online conversion does not automatically make processing unacceptable. Compare both the permitted handling and the resulting reading quality; neither question replaces the other.
Read the actual online policy
For EPUBTurn, the privacy page describes document handling and the terms describe normal file expiry. Check processing details, retention, deletion and account access before submitting. For another provider, read that provider’s current policy rather than applying EPUBTurn’s rules to every service. A general security label cannot tell you whether a processor satisfies your specific contractual requirements.
EPUBTurn’s privacy page identifies Google Gemini and providers through OpenRouter, including DeepSeek, for selected page-image processing. Review those disclosed arrangements before deciding that an upload meets your restrictions.
Keep the decision documented
Record the document category, upload permission, workflow chosen and where source/output copies will be stored. Do not include sensitive document contents in a public comparison report. After conversion, preserve the original for checking and store the EPUB under the same access rules unless your organisation says otherwise. Sending a reading edition onward to another reader service or colleague creates a separate sharing decision.
Keep reading proof separate from permitted processing
The actual NASA sample EPUB is public material you can inspect without submitting a private document. Its retained drawings do not establish confidentiality, deletion timing or compliance with your organisation’s rules. EPUBTurn is useful only when that organisation permits the upload; otherwise retain an approved local route.
Keep permission and quality in the same record
Retain a note identifying the permitted workflow and storage location without copying confidential contents into an unrestricted log. Record the source edition and any reading problem you still need to verify. If someone else will receive the EPUB, check that sharing separately. A conversion can be comfortable while still being inappropriate for distribution. For the specific file-handling conditions of EPUBTurn, return to the current privacy page; for organisational permission, use your own approved policy. Do not let an attractive sample replace either decision.
Separate processing location from convenience
A local route can keep the source within your approved computer workflow, but check whether its OCR or other steps contact an external service. An online route requires permission to send the source and an understanding of the provider’s handling terms. Network independence and conversion speed are separate questions: no controlled local-versus-cloud timing comparison was performed.
Choose only a PDF you are allowed to upload; use an approved local route for files that must stay on your computer.
