EPUBTurn and Calibre: compare a real research PDF
On the same published paper, EPUBTurn’s reviewed export kept passage order and numeric context; Calibre mixed the columns and omitted Figure 1’s plots. EPUBTurn’s figure crop still has a limitation.

The real paper used for this comparison
Calibre offers local conversion and editing control. Does its default PDF route preserve a dense research paper well enough to read? The published excerpt below gives a concrete answer: its columns interleave and its Figure 1 plots disappear. EPUBTurn’s reviewed result kept a more useful reading sequence, with a remaining figure crop limitation.
We publish EPUBTurn. The comparison uses the source and saved results so you can inspect the evidence.
How the EPUBTurn result was made
EPUBTurn’s initial automatic workflow stopped on page 7. Three equation image boundaries were manually corrected before a reviewed result was made. Competitor files use their stated defaults. The remaining figure defect was not repaired.
Column order: a value enters the wrong sentence
Calibre’s tested default output inserts “16.82–18.96; n = 57 sites” into the opening left-column passage about young mature female fish. In the source, that interval belongs to a result at the end of the left column and continuation at the top of the right. The words survive, but their interleaving interrupts the explanation. The screenshot and raw reading order are evidence for that specific problem.

Figure 1: caption words are not the plot
The source combines a world map, density curve and scatterplot, each with meaningful markers and legends. Calibre’s output retains caption and label text but not those visual panels. Numbers and a figure caption cannot replace the relationships visible in the plots. Compare the source page beside the downloaded figure passage before calling a chart retained.

What EPUBTurn retained—and what was clipped
The reviewed EPUBTurn file avoids the interleaving visible in Calibre’s default result: the interval 16.82–18.96 remains with the fished Western Indo-Pacific population. The map and two plots also remain as an image, instead of just caption text. Lower x-axis ticks and titles are clipped, so EPUBTurn still needs the source beside that figure.

Choose a permitted workflow, then judge its content
Calibre’s local conversion settings and ebook editor remain useful when uploads are prohibited or you want direct control over repairs. This test used default Calibre 8.8.0, not a tuned PDF workflow.
Browser captures use a 1280 × 900 view at 100% zoom. No native reader or device was tested. This paper has no scan or table-grid test; no accuracy or speed ranking is claimed.

We used original pages 1–10, omitting the final reference/licence page. No source wording was rewritten. Converted files and screenshot excerpts are adaptations.
When local processing is required, Calibre remains relevant despite this default result. When cloud processing is permitted and column order is your problem, try EPUBTurn on your PDF. Inspect the sample’s actual passage before full conversion; up to ten automatic pages cannot establish every chapter.
