Why EPUB page numbers differ from the PDF

Larger text takes more screens, so EPUB page numbers can differ from the PDF. Use headings and short quotations to find passages, and keep PDF pages for citations.

Locate passages without matching screen numbers

  1. Keep PDF page numbers for citations.
  2. Locate passages using distinctive text or headings.
  3. Increase the reading font and observe where screens break.
  4. Save notes with a passage quote and source reference.

Choose a reference that survives a font change

For informal notes, use a short quotation and a section heading. For academic or professional citations, use the original publication’s required reference information and page numbers. A reading app’s percentage can help you resume reading, but it is not necessarily a stable reference another reader can follow.

Try a second text size and check the same quotation again. Then rotate the device or change the window width if your reader permits it. The passage may occupy a different number of screens while remaining the same text. That is normal reflow. A missing sentence or changed paragraph order is a separate defect and should not be dismissed as a page-number difference. If a document requires dependable printed-page references, retain the PDF alongside the EPUB instead of asking one format to satisfy both adjustable reading and exact page layout.

Locate Alice’s chapter instead of matching screens

Find Chapter II, The Pool of Tears, in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Enlarge the font and locate the chapter heading again. The number of screens before the heading can change even though the chapter remains in the same reading sequence. Save a chapter name and short quotation when recording a passage; retain the printed PDF page for a citation that requires that edition’s pagination. This is a procedure readers can repeat, not a measured screen-count result.

Open the published source.

Reader page estimates vary

Some readers show locations, percentages or their own page estimates. Those displays are reader-specific. Reflow alone does not establish reliable printed-page mapping.

Distinguish a location change from missing content

When you enlarge text, a passage moving to another screen is expected. A sentence disappearing, a paragraph joining another story or a section failing to appear is not explained by ordinary reflow. Use a distinctive phrase to locate the passage and compare its surrounding words with the PDF before deciding which problem you have.

Reading percentages can also be based on different reader calculations. Treat them as convenient progress indicators within an app, rather than a universal measure to compare across devices. If two apps show different progress at the same passage, identify the passage itself before assuming the books differ.

For a document used in discussion, share a section heading and a short quote when another person may have a different reading setup. For formal citations, follow the citation requirements for the original publication. Keeping both source and reading edition makes those tasks manageable: the EPUB provides comfortable adjustable reading, while the PDF remains available for the printed page and original figure layout.
